Dancing Lessons

“Hold me,” she whispered. “I’ll teach you to dance.
We’ll spin through the darkness, a summer romance.”
“I don’t dance,” I replied. “So, I’ll teach you,” she said.
“I can’t dance!” But she frowned, so I buckled instead.
Our breaths became one as I trod on her toes,
Took a stumble and managed to head-butt her nose.
She went down with a thud, looking pallid and sick.
“I did warn you,” I muttered, and left double quick.
