The Chemical Works

From the hedge, in the darkness, we crept down and saw
The chemical works that by day looked so raw,
But here, in their own time, their faint rolling hum
Played the synthesised chords to industrial drums
And the lights of the dark girder towers that night
Lit the smog-heavy clouds as we watched out of sight.
It was mystical, dazzling, distant and cold.
The forge of the gods ringed in fire and gold.
For the ugliest beast deserves more than a glance
When it’s viewed through the eyes of a summer romance.
