Midnight on the River

Under blue sleeping willows night’s ebony cloak
Closed the party behind us in muffling smoke.
We descended the bank and we took up the oars.
The boat turning gently, we clambered aboard.
A scatter of moorhens like gunshots and mortar
Echoed volleys around us, disturbing the water,
But the untroubled river split open a crack
Then world turned below us and silence rushed back.
We emerged from the great Roman arch of the trees,
As adventurers now cast adrift on the seas,
The heavens above dropping into the night.
A million fires in the void, all alight.
And the noise of the party and adults at play,
Reinforced our decision to just slip away.
