In the Alley behind Dock Street

Here ran the one time cobbled alley where the fishwives took their stock
Of Mrs Higginson’s new husband. “’Ee can fix my stopcock, cock!”
“I’ve ’eard all about ’is plunger!” Shrieks of laughter, hoisted bosoms.
Where Danny Young, the baker’s lad, one night made up his bakers’ dozen.
Where Lucy Dimwell played at hopscotch after sharing out her fags,
And Henry Grimshaw swore he’d found a stash of hardcore porno mags.
Where Harold One Leg and his horse and cart would pick up rags and bones,
And Jenny Seabrook lost her true love, before becoming Mrs Jones.
Where Blackwell, Thorne and Co. Coal Merchants weekly hauled their sooty sacks.
Where Darren Westby took a sharp stick to the drain and found some rats.
Where Betty Swarbreck showed her knickers to the catholic boys for sweets.
Where darker shadows, never talked about, stayed hidden from the streets.
All now gone beneath the dozer – flattened rubble, nothing more –
Just another parking space outside another ASDA store.
