Beneath the veneer

I’m not the person that you think. Perhaps you don’t appreciate,
But when I say I’m crazy I’m not kidding. I hallucinate
And suffer seizures, do mad things like put the cat food in the sink,
Or walk in front of traffic, find it difficult to think
On some occasions. I’m not right at all. The history books will all attest
That centuries ago they would have hung me as a man possessed,
But now I have a CPN and DLA to help me through.
The only danger that I’m in is from the weird stuff I do.
So don’t mistake this straight façade. I’ve screwed it firmly into place,
But should you scratch the thin veneer you’ll find a very different face.
