She Dressed in Bangles

She dressed in bangles cheaply bought from fashion shops when they closed down
And lacy skirts from Trinity, with boots in black with straps of brown,
And wore her makeup emo-style to compliment her turquoise hair.
She had one stud punched through her nose, so small you’d think it wasn’t there,
And cut the fingers from her gloves. She walked around art galleries
And stood on tiptoe to admire the detail in the Lowry’s.
She overdosed on OMD and loved the Kinks and coffee shops,
And read her books by Mallory behind the salt and pepper pots,
As lonely as a dying soul. Suburbia’s a friendless land
Where culture’s just pretentious rot and beauty’s measured by the bland.
