I Dreamt of You Again Last Night

I dreamt of you again last night,
In realms where pasts had been rebuilt,
Where I could hold you close without
The pain that’s borne of waking guilt.
How deep those feelings run in dreams,
Where all the ‘never were’s belie
The mainstay of the ‘might have beens’
And, in the half-lit shadows, I
Could drown in your existence.
Such is life that dream-worlds never last
And come what may evaporate
As dawn rebuilds the real past.
