The Pregnant Dark

Something’s badly wrong tonight. It’s hard to say just what.
The sky is hung there motionless, like some enormous clot
Stuck in the lungs of our existence. You can sense it all around.
The world is choking in the rot that’s slowly rising through the ground.
There’s anger swelling in the buildings, hatred spilling from the doors,
A nasty tang of bile in the mouth where waves slop up the shores.
We need to get in off the streets. Lock up the house now good and tight.
Because there’s something lurking out there in the pregnant dark tonight.
