Literary Lanes

Let’s walk down lanes I know so well, not just from youth but literature,
Where Tolkein based his Middle Earth, and Reverend Awdry took great store
To lay the railways of his books. I’ll show you where the much-debated
Lost Shakespearean years took place, where Beartrix Potter was cremated,
Arthur Ransom’s tomes were set amongst those Blue Remembered Hills,
And Jane Eyre’s Fearndean Manor stood. Then further back we’ll wander still,
And in the depths of history meet Robin Hood in Wyresdale,
Where legends of King Arthur, dating back before the Holy Grail,
Lock arms with ancient folk tales crudely writ in times of ice and fire.
It’s worth the walk to see what’s scrawled along those lanes of Lancashire.
