In the Chapter House at Cockersand Abbey

Spray blasted out of sandstone cliffs, where trees bend double in the storms,
The chapter house stands resolute, the one remaining building from
What was a working abbey once; and through its doors, on columns arched
Across the ceiling, gruesome faces stared at us out of the darkened
Corners – grinning, grey facades of monks who, so the history goes,
Both prayed and lived within these haunted walls one thousand years ago.
“At some point someone touched them up,” the farmer said, and tapped a face.
“Thank god for that,” I muttered underneath my breath. “I thought that they’d
Got leprosy.” He kicked the stone flagged ground with one great muddied heel,
And added, “This floor’s several feet above the one that once stood here
In mediaeval times.” And there were bodies underneath that ran
To several mouldering layers, all the well-to-do who thought it grand
To be interred within these vaults. It somehow seemed quite fitting then
That since the days of Tudor excess, when they’d buried all those men
And women here so piously, the dung had spilled across the dead,
As sacrilegious farmers had reused it as a cattle shed.
